Bollywood Comedian Rajpal Yadav Begins Six-Month Jail Term Amid Long-Running Financial Dispute

New Delhi:Bollywood comedian and actor **Rajpal Yadav** has surrendered to authorities and begun serving a **six-month sentence** at **Tihar Jail**, shocking both the film industry and fans. The sentence comes after a long-standing financial dispute, which the courts have now brought to a legal conclusion.
### A Decade-Long Financial Dispute
The case dates back to **2010**, when Rajpal Yadav, in his capacity as a director, took a loan of approximately **₹5 crore** from **Murli Projects Pvt. Ltd.** to produce his debut film *Ata Pata Lapata*. Unfortunately, the film failed at the box office, triggering a series of financial difficulties for the actor.
Over time, due to interest, fines, and delayed payments, the total amount owed reportedly rose to around **₹9 crore**. Yadav issued several post-dated checks to repay the loan, but these were **bounced**, leading to criminal cases under the **Negotiable Instruments Act**.
In **April 2018**, a magistrate court sentenced Rajpal Yadav and his wife Radha to six months in jail. The decision was upheld by the Sessions Court in 2019 and eventually reached the **Delhi High Court**, which gave Yadav multiple opportunities to repay the dues in installments. Though he made partial payments, he failed to meet the full schedule.
In **June 2024**, the court temporarily suspended the sentence on the condition that Yadav make genuine efforts to settle the matter. However, the court later determined that his attempts were insufficient.
### Surrender and Jail Term
On **February 2, 2026**, the Delhi High Court ordered Rajpal Yadav to surrender by **February 4**. After failing to present himself on time and having his lawyer’s plea for an extension rejected, Yadav appeared in court on **February 5**, offering a draft of **₹25 lakh**. The court, however, maintained its original order, and Yadav surrendered to **Tihar Jail** the same day to begin his six-month sentence.
### Support from Film Industry
Following his incarceration, several Bollywood personalities publicly extended their support. Actor **Sonu Sood** promised to offer Yadav a role in his upcoming film along with the signing amount, emphasizing that it is an **act of respect, not charity**.
Similarly, **Rao Inderjeet Singh**, a music producer and owner of Jam Tunes Music, offered **₹1.1 crore** to assist Yadav, saying:
*”Rajpal Ji has brought joy to countless fans and is an integral part of Indian cinema. Our support is about standing with a fellow human being. The industry is like a family, and families support each other in difficult times.”*
Other actors and filmmakers, including **Gurmeet Choudhary** and director **Anis Bazmee**, expressed solidarity, highlighting that Yadav never intended to harm anyone and could not repay the full amount at once.
### Political Support
Even political figures have joined in assistance. **Tej Pratap Yadav**, president of **Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD)**, announced financial aid of **₹11 lakh** to Yadav’s family.
### Recent and Upcoming Projects
Professionally, Rajpal Yadav recently appeared in **Baby Jan** and **Interrogation**, and is set to feature in **Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film *Bhoot Bangla***, scheduled for release in April 2026.
This incident underscores both the financial challenges faced by actors in Bollywood and the solidarity the industry can extend in times of crisis.
