Lahore Sewer Tragedy: ‘Fake News’ Claim Sparks Fresh Controversy Despite Recovery of Bodies
Lahore: Even after the recovery of the bodies of a mother and her young daughter who died after falling into a sewer in Lahore, conflicting political statements have sparked a fresh controversy, drawing sharp criticism from the public and media.
The tragic incident occurred near Bhati Gate, close to Data Darbar, where the woman and her child fell into an open manhole. Following a prolonged and challenging rescue operation, both bodies were recovered, confirming the fatal accident.

Despite this, Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Zaheer Iqbal Channar termed the incident “fake news,” triggering strong backlash. In a video circulating on social media, the deputy speaker can be seen dismissing the incident while responding to journalists’ questions, insisting that reports of the accident were false.
Earlier, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari had also described reports of the mother and child falling into a manhole outside Data Darbar as baseless, stating that initial findings by Rescue 1122 did not confirm any such incident.

However, the subsequent recovery of both bodies clarified the situation and confirmed the tragic event. The continuation of contradictory official statements even after the facts emerged has fueled public outrage, with citizens and social media users questioning the government’s handling of the matter and its communication strategy.
The incident has not only highlighted serious civic safety concerns in Lahore but has also raised questions about accountability and the credibility of official statements in times of crisis.
