Over 300 Buildings in Walled City Lahore Declared Unsafe Ahead of Basant

LAHORE:The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has declared more than 300 buildings in the Walled City area unsafe, citing serious structural risks ahead of Basant-related activities.
The authority submitted a detailed report to the Lahore High Court in response to a petition against allowing kite flying. The report stated that a comprehensive survey of dangerous and dilapidated buildings in the Walled City was completed prior to Basant.
According to the report, out of 346 dilapidated buildings identified, 183 have been declared beyond repair, while 92 extremely hazardous structures have already been vacated. However, 254 dangerous buildings remain occupied despite the risks. Among these inhabited buildings, 103 are beyond repair and 151 have been declared repairable.
The report further revealed that among the vacated buildings, 80 have been marked for demolition, while 12 are considered repairable.
WCLA warned that the rooftops of these dangerous buildings are unsafe for Basant activities. To mitigate risks, the authority has begun installing warning notices and public awareness banners across the affected areas to discourage rooftop gatherings and kite-flying activities.
