Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM Sohail Afridi Announces Payment of Fines for Inmates, Prison Reforms

*Peshawar (Daily Qudrat):* Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Khan Afridi has announced that the provincial government will pay fines for inmates imprisoned due to non-payment across the province. During a detailed visit to Central Jail Peshawar, he also announced 2 crore PKR for improving inmate facilities, the solarization of all provincial jails, and a special two-month remission of sentences for prisoners.

CM Afridi inspected the jail’s medical ward and e-visit system, met inmates, listened to their concerns, and issued immediate orders on the spot. He inaugurated a modern security system at Central Jail Peshawar, completed at a cost of 44 crore PKR, as well as a rehabilitation center for drug-addicted inmates and a model interview room. He directed the establishment of a digital complaint cell for the prompt resolution of prisoners’ grievances.

Separate facilities for minors, women, and a hospital within the jail were also ordered, along with improvements to family quarters for inmates. Additionally, instructions were issued to coordinate with other provinces to transfer KP prisoners back to their home province and to hold an open court next week to hear prisoner-related issues. The Chief Minister emphasized strict implementation of the Parole and Probation Act 2022.

CM Afridi stated he will revisit Central Jail in January to ensure all legitimate demands are addressed. He also paid tribute to the APS tragedy, saying, “Every December 16, the APS incident revives national grief; it remains a heartbreaking chapter in the history of our country and nation.”
