India: Son Sets Mother on Fire After Being Denied Money for Drugs
In Odisha’s Bhadrak district, a shocking incident occurred when a man allegedly set his elderly mother on fire after she refused to give him money for drugs. The 65-year-old woman suffered severe burn injuries.
According to police, the accused, identified as 45-year-old Debasish Naik, is a habitual drug addict. He fled the scene immediately after the attack but was later arrested.
Initial investigations revealed that Debasish had demanded money from his mother, Jyotsnarani Naik, to buy alcohol. Upon her refusal, he first assaulted her, and after she fell to the ground, he poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.
Hearing the elderly woman’s screams, neighbours rushed to the spot, causing the accused to run away. He was apprehended shortly afterward.
The injured woman was first taken to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital. As her condition worsened, she was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
Neighbours reported that arguments between the mother and son were frequent, but no one imagined he would resort to such a brutal act over money for alcohol.
Police have launched a detailed investigation, and further legal proceedings against the accused are underway.
