Peshawar High Court Reserves Verdict on Petition Against Declaring PTI Members as Independents

Peshawar: The Peshawar High Court has reserved its verdict on a petition challenging the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision to declare Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members of the assembly as independent candidates for reserved seats.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Muhammad Naeem Anwar and Justice Kamran Hayat Miankhel heard the case.

During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel argued that PTI assembly members were wrongly categorized as independents for reserved seats. He said the petition challenges the definition of a political party under the Election Act.

The counsel further contended that the Election Commission must clarify whether PTI is recognized as a political party or not. He maintained that in case of a contradiction between the Act and the Rules, the Act must prevail.

After hearing all arguments, the court reserved its judgment.
