Prime Minister Inaugurates Upgraded Shalimar Express at Karachi Cantt Station

KARACHI – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the newly upgraded Shalimar Express after a comprehensive modernization project, marking a major development in Pakistan Railways’ improvement efforts.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony at Karachi Cantt Station, the Prime Minister praised the station’s impressive renovation, stating that the upgraded facilities—including first-class and economy-class compartments—were “remarkable” and reflected significant progress.
He added that the Shalimar Express had been transformed into a new and modern train, with enhanced waiting areas, a renovated dining room, and an automated ticketing system. He commended Hanif Abbasi for his leadership, saying that the outsourcing of the train had produced “excellent results.”
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif noted that Karachi, once the city of lights, had faced deterioration in its railway infrastructure. He emphasized that restoring routes to Central Asia could greatly boost Pakistan’s economy. “I am confident this project will become a reality soon. Funds required for railway upgradation will be provided immediately,” he assured.
He further stated that under Hanif Abbasi’s leadership, Pakistan Railways was advancing toward modernization. Collaboration between the Railways and provincial governments was yielding positive outcomes, and partnerships would be expanded to Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The Prime Minister expressed hope that Pakistan Railways would soon become one of the region’s most efficient transport systems. He also highlighted ongoing work to enhance the national freight system and reiterated the importance of the Karachi Circular Railway project, calling it essential for the city’s commuters.
Shehbaz Sharif added that historical railway buildings were being restored and that Hanif Abbasi’s performance had silenced critics.
**Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi**, speaking at the event, said the upgradation of Karachi Cantt Station had been completed in a short period. Over the past eight months, significant reforms had been introduced in the railway system. He announced that Rohri Junction would be upgraded for the first time in 150 years and that restoration work on old railway buildings would begin soon. He assured that employee rights would be protected during the outsourcing process.
**Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah** thanked the Prime Minister and the Railways Minister for their efforts, stating that major initiatives were underway to improve transportation facilities for Karachi residents. He announced that electric buses were also being introduced for the city and reaffirmed Sindh government’s commitment to fully support federal efforts for railway development.
