27th Constitutional Amendment Bill to Be Presented in Senate Today

ISLAMABAD:Following the approval of the **27th Constitutional Amendment draft** by the **joint parliamentary committee of the Senate and National Assembly on Law and Justice**, the proposed amendment will be **presented in the Upper House (Senate)** today.
According to the **Senate agenda** issued for today’s session, the **report of the Standing Committee on Law and Justice** regarding the 27th Amendment will be tabled before the House. **Senator Farooq H. Naek** will present the committee’s report, while the **Law Minister** will move the amendment bill for formal approval.
Yesterday, the **joint parliamentary committee** gave its approval to the **complete draft of the proposed amendment**, endorsing **49 clause-by-clause changes**. The committee also approved the **establishment of constitutional courts** after detailed consultations on **Article 243** of the Constitution.
One major change approved was the **extension of the timeframe for pending case decisions** from **six months to one year**. Moreover, if a case remains inactive for a year, it will be considered **disposed of**.
Opposition parties, including the **PTI, JUI-F, PkMAP, and MWM**, boycotted the committee meeting and did not participate in the proceedings.
Sources said that **government coalition partners** have not yet reached a consensus on several proposed amendments. Among these is a suggestion from the **Awami National Party (ANP)** to **rename Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province**.
The government has assured the ANP that its concerns will be addressed. However, it has sought more time to review the proposal regarding **increasing assembly seats in Balochistan**.
According to committee sources, a **final decision** on these two matters is expected **today**.
Committee chairman **Senator Farooq H. Naek** stated that the body has **authorized him and the Law Minister** to finalize certain amendments as required.
