Karachi Flooded as Thado Dam Overflows and Malir, Lyari Rivers Swell

Karachi:Heavy rainfall triggered flooding in Karachi after **Thado Dam reached capacity** and overflowed into the **Malir and Lyari rivers**, causing water to spill into surrounding residential areas.

According to officials, the **spillway release from Thado Dam** intensified water flow, pushing floodwaters into **Scheme 33 neighborhoods**, while at **Jamali Bridge**, parts of the **M-9 Motorway** were submerged. The Sindh government announced that it had decided to **break the central divider of M-9** to divert water and ease pressure.

At **Jam Goth, Malir**, floodwaters washed away parts of **Shahrah-e-Bhutto**, cutting through the road and redirecting the current.

The **Lyari River** also overflowed, sending water into **FB Area, Shafiq Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal UC-1, Goharabad, Hasan Naumani Colony, Sohrab Goth, and Bakra Piri near Lyari**, where residents found themselves trapped inside inundated homes. Flooding was also reported in **Machar Colony, Nashar Basti, and Essa Nagri**.

Rescue efforts are ongoing. A **Rescue 1122 spokesperson** confirmed that teams evacuated **15 children, an elderly man, and four women from Lassi Para**, while **eight people from Nashar Basti** and **12, including nine children, from Shahbaz Goth** were moved to safety. Meanwhile, **Sindh CM’s Special Assistant Saleem Baloch** claimed that the water on **M-9** was not from Thado Dam but from the **Lath Nadi**, adding that floodwaters were flowing from the **Kirthar Range** toward Karachi’s rivers. He maintained that while **urban settlements remain safe**, encroachments along riverbanks were worsening the crisis.
