Top Students to Receive Free E-Bikes; Subsidies Approved for E-Bikes and E-Rickshaws

Islamabad:The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of Pakistan has approved a major initiative under the Electric Vehicle Policy, which includes the provision of free electric bikes (e-bikes) to top-performing students and subsidies on e-bikes and e-rickshaws. A supplementary grant of PKR 30 billion has also been approved to settle pending dues under the remittance scheme.
According to a press release from the Federal Ministry of Finance, the ECC meeting was chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. Key decisions included the allocation of PKR 9 billion in funding for subsidies on e-bikes and e-rickshaws, alongside the distribution of free e-bikes to students who secure top positions in examinations.
The Ministry stated that during the fiscal year 2025–26, a total of 116,000 e-bikes and 3,170 e-rickshaws will be subsidized. In the first phase, 40,000 e-bikes and 1,000 e-rickshaws will be distributed soon.
Additionally, the ECC approved a PKR 30 billion supplementary grant to clear dues under the remittance scheme, with total liabilities now reaching PKR 58.26 billion. The Ministry of Finance has been instructed to work in coordination with the State Bank of Pakistan for implementation.
A financial analysis and detailed report on the remittance scheme are to be submitted to the ECC by September 15.
The ECC also approved a PKR 2 billion bailout grant for Quaid-i-Azam University and directed the university administration to present a financial self-sustainability plan to ensure long-term financial stability.
