Imran Khan and Ghulam Sarwar Ruined PIA, Says Defence Minister Khawaja Asif

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif launched a scathing attack on former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his cabinet member Ghulam Sarwar Khan, blaming them for the downfall of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), calling it a “graveyard” due to their actions.
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Khawaja Asif stated that a significant milestone in Pakistan’s aviation history has been achieved under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership. He accused the previous PTI government of criminal negligence that led to an international ban on PIA.
He specifically criticized Ghulam Sarwar for making irresponsible statements about the national airline, inviting international scrutiny and sanctions. “He damaged our own institution by publicly questioning the credibility of PIA pilots,” Asif said, adding that no clarification has ever been offered, and the consequences were a severe blow to national dignity and billions in financial losses.
He lamented the fact that where PIA once offered free repatriation of deceased overseas Pakistanis, families now have to pay thousands of dollars. “This was a tragic situation for overseas Pakistanis, many of whom have now purchased burial plots abroad,” he said.
Khawaja Asif revealed that the matter is now being resolved effectively, and PIA is in the process of regaining its operating license. He confirmed that AirBlue has also been given operational clearance and that the European Union now has renewed confidence in Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority.
He praised the efforts of Federal Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique for his dedicated work over the past two to three years, stating, “Today, we can proudly say we have succeeded.”
Looking ahead, Asif announced the government’s plan to resume direct flights to New York and confirmed that PIA will soon be privatized. He explained that after completing the restructuring process, privatization will enhance the airline’s value. Regulatory bodies have guided the process to ensure smooth approvals.
He also highlighted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s personal involvement, noting that the premier monitored progress closely and ensured every aspect was addressed. The airline’s new phase will include modern aircraft, new routes, and better travel options for overseas Pakistanis.
“This will reduce both cost and travel time. I congratulate the entire nation. This achievement is the result of hard work by many individuals. Today is a historic and proud day for Pakistan,” Khawaja Asif concluded.
