New Research Links Low-Calorie Diets to Increased Depression Symptoms, Especially in Men and Overweight Individuals

Islamabad:A recent study has found that individuals following low-calorie diets tend to experience higher levels of depression symptoms, particularly among men and those with excess weight.

The research analyzed the eating habits and mental health of 28,525 American adults. The results revealed that those on low-calorie diets were more likely to experience symptoms such as depression, low energy, and sleep disturbances compared to those who did not follow such restrictive diets.

Interestingly, the symptoms were more pronounced in men, possibly because men require higher calorie intake and find it more difficult to maintain such a restrictive eating pattern.

Experts suggest that the lack of essential nutrients like protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins in low-calorie diets can have a negative impact on brain health. These findings were published in the **BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health** journal.

Researchers have warned that adopting such diets without the guidance of a nutritionist can be harmful to mental well-being. They recommend prioritizing a balanced diet, physical activity, and adequate sleep for effective weight loss, rather than resorting to extreme caloric restrictions.
