Islamabad: In a significant move, the Federal Cabinet, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has approved the promotion of Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal. The decision comes in recognition of his outstanding leadership during the recent Operation Bunyān Marsoos and his role in ensuring the nation’s security against external threats.
During the Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended heartfelt congratulations to the entire Pakistani nation for the success of Operation Bunyān Marsoos, which played a pivotal role in countering enemy designs and securing Pakistan’s sovereignty. He praised the strategic brilliance and courageous leadership demonstrated throughout the operation, which culminated in a decisive victory for Pakistan.
General Syed Asim Munir, who was awarded the prestigious Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) for his exceptional service, has now been granted the highest military honor – the rank of Field Marshal – as a testament to his unparalleled leadership and commitment to defending the country’s territorial integrity.
The Cabinet also addressed the security situation, particularly following India’s unwarranted and unprovoked attack on Pakistan in the night of May 6-7, 2025, during which innocent civilians, including women and children, were targeted. The Cabinet condemned the assault on Pakistan’s sovereignty and border integrity by enemy forces and commended General Asim Munir’s courageous leadership in countering this aggression.
The Cabinet acknowledged that under General Munir’s guidance, Pakistan’s armed forces successfully thwarted the enemy’s designs, ensuring national security and defeating adversaries with exceptional military strategy. The promotion was formally approved following the Prime Minister’s proposal.
Additionally, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with President Asif Ali Zardari to brief him on the decision. In another significant move, the Cabinet decided to extend the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu upon the completion of his current term.
The Cabinet also resolved to honor the officers, soldiers, and citizens of Pakistan, including the martyrs and veterans, for their invaluable services during Operation Bunyān Marsoos. They will be conferred with prestigious state awards in recognition of their contributions to the defense of Pakistan.
