Shibli Faraz Urges Senate Chairman, Election Commissioner to Hold By-Election on Vacant Senate Seat

Islamabad: Opposition Leader in the Senate, Shibli Faraz, has written a letter to the Chairman Senate and the Chief Election Commissioner, raising concerns over the delay in holding a by-election for the Senate seat vacated by Dr. Sania Nishtar.
In the letter, Faraz emphasized that Sania Nishtar’s resignation was accepted on March 10, and according to Article 224 of the Constitution, it is mandatory to hold elections on a vacant seat within 30 days. He termed the failure to conduct the election within the stipulated time as unconstitutional.
Faraz further stated that the delay in elections is a denial of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s constitutional rights. He highlighted that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is already underrepresented in the Senate due to the previous delay in elections on 11 seats from the province.
Calling the move a violation of the constitutional framework, Faraz said it is contributing to the growing sense of deprivation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He urged immediate action to ensure the province’s due representation in the upper house of Parliament.
