Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Announces Benefits of Falling Oil Prices for Public, Hints at Further Reduction in Electricity Rates

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the government will pass on the benefits of falling global oil prices to the public, hinting at a further reduction in electricity prices. The announcement was made during an important meeting on maritime sector reforms, which was chaired by the Prime Minister on Monday.
Addressing the meeting, PM Shehbaz Sharif stated that just as the government had previously reduced electricity prices by passing on the benefits of lower oil prices, a similar approach would be taken now with the ongoing significant reduction in oil prices. He emphasized that the government was actively considering various proposals to bring about further reductions in electricity rates, with improvements expected in the coming months.
The Prime Minister further added that energy sector reforms had already contributed to a reduction in electricity rates, and reforms in the maritime sector were also ongoing. He highlighted the efforts of the task force working on sustainable reforms in the maritime sector and efforts to eliminate stagnation in the maritime economy.
PM Shehbaz Sharif mentioned that the global economy is closely linked to maritime resources and access to them. He instructed the review of commercial tariffs to make ports more competitive and directed improvements to the customs clearance process, particularly in the Red and Yellow channels, to speed up operations. He also instructed the development of a plan to reduce the duration of container stays at ports.
It is important to note that global crude oil prices have dropped by an additional 2-3 percent recently. Previously, the Prime Minister had also announced a significant reduction in electricity prices, with the cost per unit of electricity for domestic consumers reduced by 7.15 rupees, and the price for commercial consumers lowered by 8.58 rupees per unit.
