2024 Deadliest Year for Illegal Migrants, UN Report Reveals

The year 2024 has proven to be the deadliest for illegal migrants, with a sharp increase in fatalities, according to the United Nations Migration Agency. The agency’s latest report reveals that 8,938 illegal migrants lost their lives last year, marking a tragic rise in the number of deaths.

The highest death toll occurred in Asia, with 2,778 individuals perishing during their migration attempts. Meanwhile, 2,452 migrants tragically drowned while crossing the Mediterranean Sea, and 2,242 people lost their lives in Africa.

The report highlights that the number of fatalities has been steadily increasing over the past five years, pointing to a growing crisis among illegal migrants trying to cross dangerous borders in search of a better life. The United Nations urged for enhanced efforts to prevent such tragedies and address the root causes of illegal migration.
