Trump Administration Preparing for Possible Democratic Takeover of Congress

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump’s administration has been preparing for months for the possibility of Democrats gaining control of Congress, according to foreign media reports.

A White House official and two people familiar with the plans said the strategy aims to advance key parts of Trump’s agenda through presidential or executive powers while preparing to deal with potential investigations into his administration.

The individuals, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said senior officials, including White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Budget Director Russell Vought, have been working with the White House Counsel’s Office since April.

Their efforts are focused on identifying executive actions that Trump could implement without congressional approval in areas including immigration, tariffs, housing costs and federal spending.

The White House official further said that White House Counsel Will Scharf and his team are also reviewing the legal limits of presidential authority.

The legal review aims to determine what Trump can do independently within the law, how far he can extend his executive powers and how such decisions could be defended in court.

It is worth noting that Democrats need to gain four additional seats to secure a majority in Congress.
