Threats of Arrest Cannot Intimidate Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s Supporters, Says Aslam Ghauri

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) spokesperson Aslam Ghauri has warned political opponents that threats to arrest Maulana Fazlur Rehman would not intimidate him or his supporters, claiming that 4.5 million registered party workers were ready to defend their leader.
Speaking during a programme on a private television channel, Ghauri said Fazlur Rehman had spent three years in prison during General Zia-ul-Haq’s martial law and six months in jail during General Pervez Musharraf’s rule. He argued that the JUI-F chief could not be frightened by threats of arrest after facing difficulties under previous governments.
Ghauri said politicians often experienced imprisonment during their political careers, but those threatening Fazlur Rehman should understand the realities on the ground. He maintained that JUI-F workers remained firmly committed to their leader and would not be intimidated by such statements.
The party spokesperson claimed that JUI-F had 4.5 million registered workers and that copies of their national identity cards had been submitted to the Election Commission. The claim could not be independently verified from the available information.

Ghauri said opponents should reconsider their conduct, alleging that their repeated statements and actions were creating unnecessary tensions.
He stressed that the large number of Fazlur Rehman’s supporters should not be underestimated, warning that any attempt to pressure the JUI-F chief through threats of arrest could provoke a strong response from his followers.
“If Maulana Fazlur Rehman is threatened with arrest, millions of his workers are also there to defend their leader,” Ghauri said, reiterating the party’s resolve to stand by its chief.
He further warned political opponents to take into account the strength of the JUI-F’s support base and the loyalty of its workers before making statements against Fazlur Rehman.
The spokesperson’s remarks came amid political tensions surrounding the JUI-F chief and threats of possible legal action against him. The response of the individuals targeted by Ghauri’s warning was not immediately available.
