Rs5.1 Million Recovered from Visa Fraud Returned to Family of Laiba Ijaz, Who Died by Suicide

ISLAMABAD (Quadrat Daily) — A significant development has emerged in the case of Laiba Ijaz, who died by suicide after falling victim to a visa fraud in the federal capital, as Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry visited Laiba’s home and returned to the bereaved family the Rs5.1 million that an agent had swindled from the student.

According to reports, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Minister of State Talal Chaudhry and the Inspector General of Police Islamabad visited Laiba Ijaz’s residence, where the ministers expressed condolences to the grieving family, handed over the Rs5.1 million in cash taken through the visa fraud, and assured the family that the government and law enforcement agencies stand with the aggrieved family and that the case will be pursued to its full legal conclusion.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Laiba’s father, Rana Ijaz, said he thanked everyone including the interior minister, that his daughter had wanted to go abroad and serve the country, and that he could not forget the tragedy that befell him but took comfort in the fact that the people of Pakistan stood with him. He said Islamabad Police had always encouraged him and that he had been told further cases had surfaced against the accused, who had also taken money from girls in Mansehra. “My money has been returned to me,” he said.

It was reported that Noman, the main accused in custody in the Laiba Ijaz case, was killed during a police operation in the jurisdiction of Ramna police station. A police spokesman said a Ramna police team was taking Noman for recovery and to identify other suspects when four armed men on two motorcycles suddenly opened fire on the police party to free him.

The police spokesman said Noman was seriously wounded by the heavy fire from his own armed accomplices; police officers adopted a counter-strategy, cordoned off the area and rushed the injured suspect to hospital for immediate medical aid, but he succumbed to his wounds. A search operation was launched in the area to arrest the fleeing suspects.

It is recalled that Laiba Ijaz, a resident of Islamabad, was allegedly duped out of a large sum of Rs5.1 million on the pretext of a foreign visa, after which she fell into severe mental distress. Overcome by the fraud and the loss of the money, Laiba Ijaz allegedly took her own life. The tragic incident sparked outrage on social media and among the public, prompting federal ministers and Islamabad Police to take immediate action, arrest the accused and trace the money to return it to the victim’s family.
