Brazilian TikTok Star Malévola Alves Arrested in Egypt After Videos With Young Men Go Viral

CAIRO: Brazilian social media influencer Malévola Alves has reportedly been arrested in Egypt along with a female companion after videos showing her hugging and kissing young Egyptian men sparked controversy on social media.
Egypt’s Interior Ministry confirmed on October 20 that authorities had detained two foreign female tourists in Alexandria following an investigation into controversial videos circulating online.
According to the ministry, the videos allegedly showed the women making sexually suggestive gestures, engaging in inappropriate behaviour in public places and harassing passers-by. Authorities said both women had been identified and taken into custody, and legal proceedings had been initiated.
Brazilian media outlets identified one of the detained women as Malévola Alves, whose reported real name is Mariana Alves Gadelha Pereira.
Viral videos trigger backlash
The controversy erupted after videos recorded at various locations in Egypt began circulating widely on TikTok, Instagram and X.
The footage reportedly showed Alves interacting with young Egyptian men, hugging them and exchanging kisses while recording content for her social media accounts.
The videos triggered strong reactions among Egyptian social media users, some of whom described the scenes as contrary to local cultural values and social traditions.
Questions were also raised about the purpose of the recordings, whether the people featured understood how widely the footage would be distributed, and whether the content was created primarily to attract views and increase the influencer’s online popularity.
The controversy has reignited debate in Egypt over filming people in public places, respecting their privacy and obtaining consent before publishing videos online.
Egyptian authorities confirm detention
In its official statement, Egypt’s Interior Ministry said police had reviewed the circulating footage, identified the two foreign women and arrested them in Alexandria.
According to the ministry, the women allegedly admitted during questioning that they had recorded and shared the videos on social media to attract more views.
The authorities said the case had been referred to the Public Prosecution for further investigation.
However, the ministry did not publicly identify the women by name or specify their nationalities in its statement. Brazilian media outlets subsequently reported Alves’s identity, citing information attributed to her social media statements and legal representative.
Who is Malévola Alves?
According to Brazilian media reports, Alves is a 22-year-old transgender social media influencer known for posting fashion, travel, lifestyle and entertainment content on TikTok and Instagram.
CNN Brasil has reported that she has approximately 900,000 followers on TikTok.
During her visit to Egypt, Alves shared videos from various locations, but footage featuring interactions with local young men became the centre of a wider controversy.
Some online discussions focused on her gender identity, while others emphasised the importance of respecting consent, privacy and local laws regardless of an individual’s identity.
Lawyer addresses the case
Brazilian media outlets reported that, before her arrest, Alves had said on social media that she and her companion had been taken to a police station in Alexandria and that their passports had been confiscated.
She also reportedly said that police had questioned the two women about their gender identity.

Her lawyer, Jonatha Carvalho Matos, subsequently said the legal team was in contact with the Brazilian Embassy in Cairo and the relevant Egyptian authorities.
According to the lawyer, the immediate priority was to safeguard Alves’s physical well-being, personal security and legal rights. He also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information while the legal team continued to monitor the situation.
Previous cases involving social media influencers in Egypt
Egypt has previously taken legal action against social media influencers over content authorities considered contrary to public morality laws.
Amnesty International has also raised concerns in the past about actions taken by Egyptian authorities against some TikTok influencers and members of gender minorities.
In the present case, however, Egyptian authorities have cited allegations of inappropriate public behaviour, sexually suggestive gestures and harassment of passers-by as the basis for the arrests.
It remains unclear which specific legal provisions will ultimately be applied or when court proceedings may begin.
The allegations have not yet been finally determined by a court, and the outcome will depend on the legal proceedings and evidence presented.
The case has developed from a social media controversy into a formal investigation, highlighting the legal and cultural challenges international influencers may face when creating content abroad.
