Persistent Fatigue and Body Pain in Women May Signal Autoimmune Diseases, New Research Finds

KARACHI: Persistent fatigue, body aches and joint pain in women may sometimes indicate an underlying autoimmune disease rather than psychological distress, according to research from the University of Cambridge.

The findings highlight concerns that women suffering from autoimmune conditions may face a greater risk than men of receiving an incorrect diagnosis, potentially delaying appropriate treatment.

Autoimmune diseases occur when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells and tissues. Depending on the condition, symptoms may include extreme fatigue, joint pain, skin rashes and persistent physical discomfort.

The report highlights the experiences of women whose symptoms are sometimes dismissed when medical examinations fail to identify an immediate cause. Some patients may be told that their complaints are psychological or related to stress and anxiety, even when an underlying physical condition has not been ruled out.

According to the research findings cited in the report, women with autoimmune diseases were 46 per cent more likely to receive a psychiatric diagnosis and 74 per cent more likely to have their symptoms attributed to stress or anxiety.

One of the major concerns is the time it can take to establish an accurate diagnosis. Some women reportedly wait years before their condition is correctly identified, resulting in delays in treatment and continued suffering.

The findings underline the importance of taking women’s symptoms seriously and ensuring that persistent or unexplained pain and fatigue receive appropriate medical assessment.

Health professionals and patients alike should recognise that physical symptoms should not automatically be dismissed as imaginary or stress-related. A careful evaluation may help identify an underlying condition and ensure timely treatment.

Medical advice: Persistent fatigue, unexplained body pain, joint discomfort or recurring skin rashes warrant consultation with a qualified healthcare professional. These symptoms can have many causes and do not necessarily indicate an autoimmune disease. Only an appropriate medical assessment can help determine the cause.
