Over 150 Drug Addicts, Peddlers Arrested in Quetta City Drain Crackdown

QUETTA: Quetta police and the Social Welfare Department have launched a major joint crackdown against drug dealers and addicts in the city’s main drain area, demolishing several drug dens and arresting more than 150 drug addicts and peddlers.
A heavy contingent of police was deployed in and around the City Drain during the operation, which targeted areas allegedly being used as hideouts by drug dealers and addicts.
City Superintendent of Police Asif Ghafoor said more than 150 drug addicts were taken into custody during the crackdown, while individuals allegedly involved in supplying and selling drugs were also arrested.
He said all addicts found abandoned on roads and in drains were immediately shifted to drug rehabilitation centres, where they have been provided treatment.
The SP said the anti-drug campaign would continue on a daily basis under the direct supervision of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Quetta and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations.
He said the objective of the ongoing campaign was to address the problems faced by citizens and eliminate drug-related activities from public spaces in the city.
Meanwhile, Social Welfare Director Hanif Rind said the action was being carried out on the special directives of Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti and Parliamentary Secretary for Social Welfare Wali Muhammad Noorzai.
He said a large number of drug patients shifted during the operation had been admitted to different rehabilitation centres, where their formal treatment had begun.
Hanif Rind expressed the determination to continue the anti-drug campaign throughout the year to make Quetta free of drugs.
He said the Social Welfare Department would continue working alongside the police and take sustained action to eliminate the menace of drugs from the streets of the provincial capital.
