‘My Karachi Is Remembered When Votes and Money Are Needed,’ Says Farooq Sattar

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Farooq Sattar has criticized the performance of Karachi Mayor, saying that the city’s mayor was serving as administrator before the 2023 local government elections and suggesting that the mayor’s “political setting” could be disrupted.
Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Farooq Sattar said thousands of retired Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) employees had not received their pensions and other outstanding dues.
He claimed that more than 10,000 retired employees had been deprived of their dues for nearly a decade. He said KMC employees had filed a petition in the Sindh High Court with the support of MQM-P.
“This is also a question mark over the mayor’s performance. Pensions and employees’ dues are not charity. Retired employees should receive their pensions and other outstanding payments without delay,” he said.
According to Jang, Farooq Sattar said the Sindh High Court had announced its decision on the petition on September 15, describing the ruling as clear and unambiguous.
He said the Sindh government could no longer avoid implementation of the court’s decision and claimed that the ruling raised questions about the performance of the Karachi mayor.
According to Sattar, the court had directed that the outstanding dues of KMC’s retired employees be paid within two months and instructed the Sindh chief secretary to supervise the payment process.
He said the court ruling demonstrated what he described as KMC’s administrative failure and maintained that the retired employees’ dues would now have to be paid under all circumstances.
Commenting on other political issues, Sattar said Jamaat-e-Islami had gathered a small number of people over the issue of the petroleum levy.
“When votes and money are needed, ‘My Karachi’ is remembered,” he remarked.
Sattar also called for the establishment of administrative units in all districts of Sindh, alleging that the Sindh government had broken records of corruption and mismanagement.
