Those Responsible for Supplying Water Through Taps Are Running Tankers, Says Mustafa Kamal
KARACHI: Federal Minister for Health Syed Mustafa Kamal has criticized Karachi’s water supply system, alleging that individuals responsible for ensuring water reaches households through pipelines are themselves involved in the tanker business.
Addressing a ceremony in Karachi, Mustafa Kamal claimed that some people who had previously been involved in selling drugs had shifted to the water business because they could be arrested for drug-related activities, whereas involvement in the water business could lead to becoming a senator.
He said people whose tanker businesses had grown to billions of rupees would not want water to be supplied through household taps.
“Those responsible for supplying water through taps are the same people running tankers,” Mustafa Kamal said.
He claimed that the tanker business was not being operated by poor people, pushcart vendors or owners of small shops, but by influential and affluent groups.
“There is no rocket science involved in understanding why we are being destroyed. We know why we are suffering,” he said.
Mustafa Kamal also recalled his tenure as Karachi’s mayor, saying that during that period the World Economic Forum had included Karachi among the 12 fastest-growing cities in the world.
He added that Karachi had now reached the third position among the world’s worst cities, referring to the deterioration in the city’s overall conditions.
