Entire System Has Been Handed Over to a ‘Youngster’ No More Than a Personal Servant: Fazlur Rehman

LAHORE: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has strongly criticized the country’s political system, establishment and efforts to create new provinces, warning that decisions could no longer be imposed on the people through the use of power.
Addressing a Khatm-e-Nabuwwat conference in Lahore, Fazlur Rehman alleged that “dummy representatives” were running the government and that a minority was ruling the country.
“The entire system has been handed over to a ‘youngster’ whose status is no more than that of a personal servant,” he said.
Referring to committees formed regarding the Islamabad Territory, the JUI-F chief said two committees had been constituted and the same “youngster” was present in both. He claimed that the reports submitted by the two committees contradicted each other.
“Are we going to hand Pakistan over to such a personal servant?” Fazlur Rehman questioned, adding that he would continue to speak the truth according to his conscience.

Comparing the country’s past and present circumstances, he said the same military establishment had once introduced the One Unit system by merging the four provinces into West Pakistan, whereas efforts were now being made to divide provinces into smaller units.
“Every room of the house is on fire, while our brothers are saying, ‘Come, let’s divide the house.’ Is this wisdom?” he asked.
Fazlur Rehman clarified that his party was not opposed to the creation of new provinces in principle, but said the timing, circumstances and national consensus must be taken into account.
He said the Pakistan Peoples Party talked about new provinces, but its interest remained limited to Sindh. He also criticized the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz for remaining silent on the issue.
The JUI-F chief said decisions regarding new provinces or any constitutional amendments should not be imposed unilaterally. Instead, he called for an open debate in Parliament and before the public.
“Decisions can no longer be imposed through force,” Fazlur Rehman said.
