Who Would Be Suitable as Chief Minister If Lahore Becomes a Separate Province? Public Opinion Emerges

LAHORE: Lahore is considered one of the most politically important cities in Punjab and plays a central role in both provincial and national politics. The city has also remained a strong political base for several major political parties and leaders, giving it particular importance in the race for the Punjab chief minister’s office.

Lahore Division is an important and densely populated division of Punjab, comprising four districts — Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib. If Lahore were granted the status of a separate province, one of the key questions would be who should lead the new province as chief minister.

When Azad Digital representatives asked citizens for their views, several interesting opinions emerged. The three names that received the most attention were Hamza Shahbaz, Mian Amer Mahmood and Aleem Khan.

Citizens expressed different opinions based on their political preferences and assessment of experience. Some considered Hamza Shahbaz suitable because of his political and administrative experience, while others said Mian Amer Mahmood and Aleem Khan should also be considered.

Hamza Shahbaz

A number of Lahore residents said they would like to see Hamza Shahbaz become chief minister of a separate Lahore province.

Hamza Shahbaz is a prominent figure in Punjab politics and has experience leading the provincial government. Several citizens said his political and administrative experience could help guide a new province during its initial phase.

Residents said the chief minister of a new province should understand Lahore’s problems, have a strong grip on administrative affairs and possess the ability to address public issues. In their view, Hamza Shahbaz possesses these qualities and should therefore be given an opportunity.

Mian Amer Mahmood

Some citizens expressed support for Mian Amer Mahmood, saying he had worked extensively, particularly in the field of education for children and young people, while largely remaining behind the scenes.

One resident said Amer Mahmood’s efforts and tendency to promote others rather than seek the spotlight were qualities that should be recognized and that he deserved an opportunity to lead.

Mian Amer Mahmood is a well-known figure in Lahore’s political and civic affairs, while Aleem Khan has also played an important role in Punjab politics.

Aleem Khan

Residents of Lahore and Kasur also expressed a desire to see Muhammad Aleem Khan become chief minister, citing his political experience and role in Punjab politics.

Some citizens said new people should also be given an opportunity to lead if a new province is created.

While a large number of Lahorites expressed preferences for particular personalities, some citizens avoided naming any individual. They said that whenever a new province is actually established, public opinion and the electoral mandate would ultimately play a decisive role in determining who holds the chief minister’s office.

For now, the three names emerging from public opinion — Hamza Shahbaz, Mian Amer Mahmood and Aleem Khan — indicate that citizens value political experience, administrative capability and a strong connection with Lahore when considering potential leadership for a new province.
