Rs12 Billion Project Launched to Modernize Gadani Ship Recycling

KARACHI: A Rs12 billion project has been launched to modernize the Gadani Ship Recycling facility and transform it into a modern and environmentally friendly ship recycling center.

A meeting regarding Gadani Ship Recycling was held under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, where the formal launch of work on the facility’s modernization was announced.

Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said Gadani Ship Recycling is being brought into line with the Hong Kong Convention. He said the Rs12 billion modernization project would turn Gadani into a modern and environmentally sustainable ship recycling hub.

The minister said every possible measure would be taken to ensure the health and welfare of workers. A 30-bed hospital, school and workers’ colony would also be established in Gadani.

He said facilities for the management of industrial and hazardous waste would be developed at Gadani. The upgrade of the facility would promote the circular economy and create employment opportunities.

Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said economic activity and environmental sustainability would move forward together at Gadani.
