Netherlands Transfers 86 Tons of Gold from US and Canada to UK Amid Geopolitical Tensions

AMSTERDAM:The Dutch central bank has transferred 86 tons of its gold reserves from the United States and Canada to the United Kingdom amid growing geopolitical tensions.

The Dutch Central Bank (DNB) said gold stored in London can be traded more easily compared with reserves held in New York and Ottawa.

According to the bank, the Netherlands had 612.4 tons of gold reserves at the end of 2025, with a total value of €72.2 billion.

Before the latest transfer, 31.3 percent of the Netherlands’ gold was held in New York and 19.7 percent in Ottawa. Following the move, the share held in the United States has fallen to 18.5 percent, while the share in Canada has also declined to 18.5 percent.

Meanwhile, the proportion of Dutch gold reserves held in London has increased from 18.1 percent to 32.1 percent. Around 30.8 percent of the country’s gold reserves remain stored in the Netherlands.

The DNB said the transfer was carried out partly through gold purchases and sales and partly through the physical relocation of gold.

The bank explained that more than 27 tons of gold were moved from the United States and Canada to the Dutch city of Zeist, after which an equivalent amount was transferred from Zeist to London.
