Punjab Teachers to Grow Vegetables in Schools Alongside Teaching Duties

LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to promote kitchen gardening in all government schools across the province alongside regular educational activities.

Under the new directives, teachers and school administrations will be required to grow vegetables within school premises while continuing their teaching responsibilities. Education officers across Punjab have been instructed to personally monitor implementation at the district level, with administrative action to be taken against institutions found negligent.

The School Education Department Punjab has issued a formal notification making the cultivation of seasonal vegetables mandatory in educational institutions across the province. The initiative aims to make productive use of vacant land on school premises.

Principals and headmasters of government schools have been directed to ensure strict and immediate implementation of the initiative. Each school head will appoint a responsible person to oversee vegetable cultivation, watering and daily maintenance.

To monitor the progress and transparency of the project, schools have also been instructed to share photographs of the vegetable gardens and their upkeep with the relevant authorities on a daily basis.

Officials said the initiative aims to promote environmental awareness, kitchen-gardening skills and self-reliance among students. It will also enable schools to make positive use of vacant land.

The fresh and pesticide-free vegetables produced through the initiative may be used for school welfare activities or provided to students, officials said.
