Imran Khan Won the World Cup, But He Is Now in Jail Over May 9, Rebellion and Corruption Allegations: Ammar Masood

ISLAMABAD: Analyst Ammar Masood has said that while Imran Khan won the 1992 Cricket World Cup, he is now in prison over allegations related to the May 9 incidents, rebellion against the state and corruption.

Speaking on a V News programme, Masood said, “Yes, Imran Khan won the World Cup, but now there is also May 9. He has been accused of rebellion against the state and is in jail over corruption allegations.”

He said sports should be kept separate from politics, adding that the interview of Imran Khan’s sons, Qasim and Sulaiman Khan, on Sky Sports appeared to him to be part of a “conspiracy.” He claimed that Pakistan had lodged a strong protest, following which the interview was stopped.

Commenting on Pakistani cricketers who have written letters concerning Imran Khan, Masood said those players were unaware of what he alleged was the treatment meted out to the opposition when Imran Khan was prime minister.

Masood said that if Imran Khan’s sons wanted to meet their father, they should come to Pakistan. He argued that they could apply for visas and would receive them according to the applicable procedure.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly lodged a formal complaint with Sky Sports over the broadcast of an interview with Imran Khan’s sons during the lunch break on the first day of the second Test at Lord’s.

According to The Guardian, the complaint concerned the interview with Qasim and Sulaiman Khan, in which they expressed concern over what they described as the Pakistani government’s alleged mistreatment of their father.

Imran Khan has been in prison for around three years amid multiple legal cases. His sons have also raised concerns about his conditions in custody. His lawyers have described his prison conditions as serious and dangerous, while his sister has alleged that he was subjected to mistreatment during his detention.
