Pakistan Not Bound by US Sanctions on Iran, Says Foreign Office

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has made it clear that it is not bound to accept or implement unilateral economic sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran, saying such sanctions are contrary to international law.

Responding to questions during the Foreign Office’s weekly media briefing in Islamabad, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andarabi said Pakistan did not consider Washington’s unilateral sanctions against Tehran to be in accordance with international law.

The spokesperson stressed that all international disputes and matters involving tensions should be resolved solely through meaningful dialogue and diplomacy rather than threats or economic sanctions.

He said Pakistan believed that diplomatic engagement and negotiations remained the appropriate way to address international disputes and tensions.

The Foreign Office statement came after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently announced a new series of stringent economic sanctions against Iran.

The Trump administration has continued to increase economic and political pressure on Tehran in an effort to persuade Iran to accept its political and economic demands.

However, Pakistan has reiterated its position that it does not recognize or consider itself bound by unilateral US measures against its neighboring country, Iran.
