Aamir Liaquat apologises to Jang, Geo in contempt of court case

ISLAMABAD: TV anchor and MNA Aamir Liaquat Hussain on Thursday apologised to Jang Group and Geo in a contempt of court case following which the Supreme Court pardoned him and wrapped up the case. A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Ijazul Ahsan heard a contempt of court case against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA and TV anchor. Liaquat, case prosecutor Sajid Ilyas Bhatti and Geo and Jang Group counsel Faisal Siddiqui appeared for the hearing. As the hearing went under way, Liaquat informed the court that his counsel, Rizwan Abbasi was busy with another case. However, the chief justice upheld that the case will be wrapped up today and went on break till the suspect’s counsel appeared. When the hearing resumed, Liaquat’s counsel said, “My client regrets his action and is issuing an unconditional apology.” However, the chief justice said, “It does not seem from his face that he regrets his action.” At this, Liaquat said, “I sent apologies to all judges hearing the case, including you, at your respective chambers.” Geo and Jang Group’s counsel Faisal Siddiqui then informed the court that he had instructions from his clients to oppose the apology. However, the chief justice observed that contempt of court cases are between the court and the perpetrator. At this, Liaquat once again said, “I am extremely ashamed and apologise knowing that if I repeat such a blunder in the future that I may not be entitled to a pardon.” The chief justice then said, “You worked for a long time with Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman and we will write in our order that you apologised to him and his son Mir Ibrahim.” To this, Liquat said, “I tender an apology to Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman, Mir Ibrahim and Geo and Jang Group.” When Liaquat assured that he will not repeat such an act again, the top judge remarked that he is a good speaker and said, “You will not be pardoned if you do not comply with court orders again.” The court then accepted Liaquat’s apology and disposed of the contempt petition against him. Later in a video message, the anchor said he had apologised to Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman, Mir Ibrahim and Geo and Jang Group. In August, the SC had slapped contempt of court charges against Hussain while taking up a petitions filed by Geo News anchorperson Shahzeb Khanzada, Independent Media Group, Jang and Geo Group. The petitioners had pleaded that contempt proceedings be initiated against Hussain, as the court had allowed him to continue his programme on the condition that he would abstain from using derogatory words against anyone. However, Hussain did not comply with court orders and used derogatory language against Jang, Geo Group and termed the Chief Executive of Jang and Geo Group Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, Mir Ibrahim and anchorperson Shahzeb Khanzada.
