Eight killed, over 20 injured in Quetta suicide blast

At least eight people were killed and over 20 others injured in a suicide blast near Quetta’s Iqbal Road on Monday, health and police officials said.

Rescue volunteers and a large contingent of law enforcement personnel immediately reached the site. They shifted bodies and wounded persons to hospital.

Eight bodies and 21 wounded persons were brought to the Civil Hospital, a spokesperson confirmed.

However, Quetta DIG Abdul Razzak Cheema put the death toll at seven. He said the deceased also included two policemen and a levies official.

“A suicide bomber attempted to enter a rally organised by a religious party,” Cheema told reporters in Quetta. “Security personnel sacrificed their lives to save others’.”

The bomber — a young man — was racing towards the rally, said a police official who was present at the site. He detonated himself after being intercepted by security personnel.

Several vehicles and motorbikes were also damaged in the wake of the blast.

Meanwhile, Sindh Inspector General Kaleem Imam instructed senior police officials beef up security across the province following the Quetta suicide blast.

Officials have been told to take concrete security measures around government buildings, offices, railway stations, bus terminals, airports and mosques, a spokesperson for the Sindh Police said.
