Faf du Plessis quits as South Africa’s Test and T20I captain

South Africa: Faf du Plessis has ended his tenure as the captain of South Africa from T20I and Test format with immediate effect.

According to press-release, the right-handed batsman thinks that it’s a need to step back as skipper in order to facilitate the next leaders within the team under the leadership of Quinton de Kock.

De Kock was named as the stand-in captain for the ODI series against England as du Plessis decided to rest. Director of South African cricket, Graeme Smith also said that they are de Kock as the permanent captain.

“One of the toughest decisions to make, but I remain fully committed to supporting Quinton, Mark Boucher, and my teammates as we continue to rebuild and re-align as a team,” du Plessis said in a CSA press release.

The 35-year-old on Instagram wrote, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to lead my country,”

Du Plessis added that he is available for the selection in all three formats. “I remain committed to playing in all three formats of the game for now as a player and will offer my knowledge and time to the new leaders of the side,” he added.

South Africa will play against Australia from February 21 in the three-match T20I series followed by as many ODIs.

It must be noted that Faf was appointed as the captain in T20I cricket in 2012. He won 23 matches in 37 matches as captain. In ODI, he captained in 39 matches and won 28. In the elite form of cricket, he captained in 35 matches and won 18.
