PM office plans to appoint tobacco control adviser

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to appoint a Prime Minister’s Adviser on Tobacco Control to ensure implementation of the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), suggesting PM’s focal person on polio Babar bin Atta to helm the position. An official of the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS), who is officially not authorised to speak on the matter, told Dawn that a summary had been sent to the PM Office for the appointment of the adviser. “As currently, the prime minister has the charge of minister NHS, so the adviser would sit in the PM Office and work as his adviser,” he said. The NHS official said that the prime minister’s focal person for polio eradication and the infrastructure of monitoring a public health programme from the highest office has been a strong model reflecting strong political commitment which was successfully translated into on-the-ground action with the help of local district administrations.
